Short Day in Chicago for Kurt Johnson

JOLIET, Ill. -- Kurt Johnson had a short workday at Route 66 Raceway when he was defeated in the first round of eliminations at the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers NHRA Nationals. K.J., the No. 15 qualifier, bowed to No. 2 qualifier Tom Hammonds, 6.850 to 6.866. The lanky Hammonds, a former NBA player, went on to post a runner-up finish to Bruce Allen.

"We actually made the best run in the first round that we made all weekend, but lane choice was an issue," Kurt commented. "All the quick cars chose the left lane, and when you qualify in the back half of the field like I did, it means you don't have a choice.

"There's no excuse for that," Johnson declared. "We need to be in the top eight. We need to get the car off the starting line better. We've got work to do."

After a DNQ at the preceding race in Topeka, Johnson was satisfied to be in the show on Sunday in Chicago. He had to sweat out the final qualifying sessions while other drivers attempted to unseat him.

"Anytime you go into the last session in the No. 15 spot, you know there are four or five cars that could bump you out," Johnson noted. "I have to thank Mother Nature for the warm weather on Saturday. The track was hot and the air was not as good as it was on Friday. The name of the game is to make a perfect run at the perfect time and get in the show."

Johnson maintained his place in the top ten in the championship race. With a one-week break before the Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, on June 14-16, K.J. has plenty of work to do.
